Ashok Lahiri Appointed Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog; Gobardhan Das Named Full-Time Member
Ashok Lahiri has been appointed Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, replacing Suman Bery, while IISER Bhopal Director Gobardhan Das joins as a full-time Member. The move, announced during West Bengal assembly elections, highlights recognition of Bengali talent in India’s top policy think tank.
Ashok Lahiri, a former Chief Economic Adviser, brings extensive global experience to the role, having served with both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. In addition to his international credentials, Lahiri is also a Bharatiya Janata Party Member of the Legislative Assembly from West Bengal, adding a political dimension to his economic expertise.
Alongside this appointment, Gobardhan Das, Director of IISER Bhopal, has been inducted as a full-time Member of NITI Aayog. Das is widely recognized for his contributions to tuberculosis research and is noted for his inspiring journey from hardship to academic and scientific prominence.
The appointments were announced at a time when West Bengal is witnessing assembly elections, adding political significance to the development. Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party have welcomed the decision, describing it as recognition of Bengali talent and an effort to strengthen India’s policy framework with experienced and accomplished individuals.
